Eastbound route only
Leave the M4 at Junction 2 and follow signs to Central London / North and South Circular. At the Chiswick roundabout take the 1st exit signed North Circular A406. At the 1st set of traffic lights, turn left signed B4491 South Ealing.
At the first set of traffic lights go straight on.
At the 2nd set of traffic lights (before a row of shops) turn left into Lionel Road.
Pass the houses on the left and then park on the pavement (following local practice) near the entry gate.
Return to M4
Wide cars and camper vans should return along Lionel Road, turn right at the junction with Popes Lane, and then right again to join the A406 at the traffic lights. This returns to the Chiswick roundabout.
Otherwise, take a deep breath and continue along Lionel Road to the narrow vehicle width restrictors. Turn left onto the A4 just metres from the Chiswick roundabout and M4 interchange.
Gunnersbury Park
Gunnersbury Park, once a home of the Rothschilds, is now essentially a sophisticated recreation ground for West Londoners.
The approach to Gunnersbury from Lionel Road has something of the ‘back door' about it, and there is a reason for this. Although there is supposed to be an official (free) car park in Pope's Lane – we just couldn't find it. Two complete orbits of the block later, we still couldn't find it. So, if you find the car park – park there.
Otherwise, enter the park through one of the gates on Lionel Road and turn right to walk away from the football pitches and through the woodland towards the pond.
With the pond to the left walk straight on to emerge from the trees.
Follow the path around the perimeter of the park, passing tennis courts on the left, as far as the boating lake. Keep this to the right, and continue until the hard surface path leading from the car park. Turn left and follow the path to a pavilion, and then keep going in the same direction towards the woodland. Turn right in the woodland to return to the gate and Lionel Road.
