Getting There

Sandall Beat Woods

Leave the M18 at Junction 4 and take the A18, signed Doncaster and Doncaster racecourse.

Follow signs to the racecourse and turn left into Gate 8 of the racecourse from Leger Way.

Follow the road round to the left and continue along the long lane to the car park at the end.

Return to M18 Junction 4

Turn right out of Gate 8 and at the next three roundabouts follow the signs for Thorne A18.

At the next roundabout, take the 3rd exit signed Scunthorpe A630.

Continue along the A630 following the signs to Scunthorpe to return to Junction 4 of the M18.

Map of M18 Junction 4 Walk

Length of walk: 30-60 minutes

Sandall Beat Wood is much bigger than it seems, with dozens of criss-crossing paths which make this one quite tricky to describe.

We started off by following the main track from the car park, ignoring the turning to the left to the Visitor Centre, and continuing as far as the (fenced off) railway line. We then turned right and walked across the top of a field into the smaller woods beyond. This route seems to be a good one for dogs to ‘do the business’ before coming nearer to the area that’s more popular with families, and takes about 30 minutes.

We came back the same way, and then turned right to investigate the Community Environment Centre. There’s a sturdy play area for kids here, with lots to climb and slide on. The wood continues beyond the playground, either over a footbridge to reach the other side of the railway or by heading away from the Centre on one of the many paths.

The woods are popular with local dog-owners, and there’s good walking to be had here.
