The Lickey Hills

The Lickeys are worth visiting in their own right, as well as being a fantastic place to break a journey.
There are three trails here, the Squirrel Trail is the shortest at just under a mile, the Bluebell Trail is 1.5 miles, and the Woodpecker Trail an enthusiastic 7 miles. All the trails are clearly marked and very easy to follow.
The charm of the Lickeys was immortalised by JRR Tolkien, as he used this countryside as the inspiration for Middle Earth. He is said to have known every inch of the landscape, and every detail of the trees and plants here. With commendable restraint the area has not been turned into a hobbit theme park, but if you return to your car at dusk, it isn't hard to imagine the Ents behind you preparing for a solemn gathering.
