Getting There

At the roundabout take the 2nd exit signed A466 Monmouth. At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit, A466 signed Tintern and Monmouth. Pass Chepstow racecourse on the right hand side.
Enter St Arvan and follow the A466 as it winds up the steep hill. The car park is on the right shortly after the road starts to descend.

The Wye Valley Walk

The signed pathway here is part of the 136 mile Wye Valley footpath which starts at nearby Chepstow Castle.
This part of the route is particularly interesting as it gives walkers in this ancient woodland a good idea of what forested Wales would have looked like many years ago.
There are two walking options here. The first is uphill and downhill, and the second is downhill and uphill.
The uphill route is the most dramatic and scenic, with just 365 broad steps to climb to the top of the ridge. On a fine day the view from the top is truly sensational. This path starts across the road from the car park.
The downhill route starts in the car park, but on the day we were here the path was closed because of mud slips after heavy rain.
