Canalside walk

Map of M69 Junction 1 Walk

Length of walk (Bridge No.15 to Bridge No.13 and back): 35 minutes

Turn right out of the Lime Kiln car park and walk over the bridge. At the end of the bridge, walk down the steps to the towpath and double back along the towpath to walk under the bridge (Bridge No.15). The canal is on your left.

This part of the towpath is called the Ashby Canal No.1 Connection. It is a popular mooring site for narrow boats, many of which have resident dogs, so don't be surprised if your pooch gets a rousing welcome.

As you walk, the sound of the road is quickly left behind, and an orchestra of birds will serenade you on your way. Look out for the flashing wings of the kingfishers. The area is flat and green, with good wide views on the left bank. A truly relaxing place to be.

The canal bends round to the right and the towpath passes under Bridge No.14. The canal takes a long bend to the left and the approach to Bridge No.13 is another place where narrowboats are able to moor. At this point it is possible to walk up to the bridge. There are large fields on both sides of the canal where horses are trained for chases.

Facilities

The Lime Kiln

At The Lime Kiln. This pub is something of a mystery. It was praised by members of the canal boat fraternity, who said that they regularly took their terrier into the bar, but we haven't yet found it open. There is definitely a large outdoor seating area.

There is a BP garage further up the A5.
