Getting There
Southbound route only
Leave the M90 at Junction 7 and at the junction turn left onto the A91, Milnathort.
Enter Milnathort and at a mini-roundabout take the 3rd exit signed Kinross A9122.
Enter Kinross and continue ahead. Turn left at the brown sign to Lochleven Castle and Kirkgate Park (Burns Begg Street). Continue to follow the brown signs through a residential area and you will emerge at a car park in front of the Boathouse Bistro.
Return to M90 southbound
Leave the car park and then turn right at the end of Burns Begg Street. At a mini-roundabout turn left, Station Road, signed M90 and return to the M90 at Junction 6.
Loch Leven
There is much more to do here than just walk the dog, so allow time to enjoy the goodies on offer.
Starting with the walk, take the ducted path opposite the Bistro and this will bring you to an enormous piece of parkland – Loch Leven nature reserve. If you have kids with you, they will be sure to head off towards the pirate playground over on the left while keen swimming hounds will be equally intent on getting to one of the dog beaches at the side of the loch on the right.
The walk element in the park follows a line of sight to the trees and the small promontory directly ahead. This is just under a mile, and the open space is a great opportunity to dry the dog out with a high-octane ball or frisbee game.
While you’re here
Take a boat trip to the island fortress of Lochleven castle. Mary Queen of Scots was once a ‘guest’ here, and the castle is still in surprisingly good condition. The ferry runs from April to September from the jetty by the car park. History buffs can get more background detail on the castle from Undiscovered Scotland.
