A guide to dog cages for the car
Owners of dogs will, quite regularly, require their pooch to travel distances with them. As public transport isn't too sympathetic to canine lovers, it will most likely be done in a car. For this reason, it's important that you look at dog cages for cars, as this is the safest thing to use.
There are a number of benefits of dog cages. Safety-wise, it's a must-have; while a dog may seem happy and protected in the back seat, it only takes a collision or a particularly sudden stop to cause your dog to injure itself. Similarly, it also keeps passengers safe in this situation; aside from dogs being thrown into other people in the car, a beloved pet may lash out in pain, or even run away out of confusion.
The best-behaved dogs can be frightened or surprised by things passing them while they are in the car, and distress could cause your dog to jump around or attempt to climb through into the front of the car, distracting the driver. This is obviously an extremely dangerous situation for you, passengers and other road users.
When you're looking at the range of dog cages available, you should prioritise a few things. Firstly, you must ensure you choose a cage specifically-designed for use in a car. It should also be appropriately-sized for both the car and dog that will use it; a dog should be able to easily turn around and lie down, though be restricted enough to avoid being thrown around.
A dog also needs fresh air to prevent overheating, so aim for a well-ventilated cage. After all, you can always cover part of the cage with a blanket if you are concerned about the cold. Also be sure to get a crate that's easy enough to clean.
Finally, consider your dog's temperament and their usual behaviour in the car. Some dogs prefer a cave-like atmosphere of moulded plastic crates, yet others will want to see their surroundings and prefer a wire cage. Like you, your dog has a personality that you should do everything in your power to maintain.
