One of a chain of ancient forests surrounding London, this historic woodland has 540 acres of stunning trees. It's visited by nearly half a million people annually, and yet it never seems to be crowded.

Wonderful for dogs, and ideally placed for a dog walk before heading into town or going north on the M40.

There's a choice of two walks here, one along the banks of the Thames and the other through a nature reserve.

Both walks pass the very civilised Spade Oak, where fine dining and superb coffee can be found.

This walk lies between Junction 3 and Junction 4 of the M40.

Junction 5

Walk through an enchanting bluebell wood, and then enjoy a visit to a traditionally tiny Oxfordshire pub - with a dog under nearly all the tables!

Easy to reach betwen Chinnor and Watlington even if you're not on the M40.

Junction 5

Good dog walking country between Stokenchurch and Lewknor, with a number of woodland paths to vary the route if this becomes a regular walk place.  It is hilly, but there are sitting spots.

Red Kites are usually wheeling overhead, and often get so close you can almost count the feathers.

Great Haseley is one of those calendar-worthy rural villages, and it has been featured more than once in the Midsomer Murders series.
