This nature reserve was opened by David Bellamy in 2003, and is a fine dog-walk space with clearly marked paths leading through fields, woodland and a disused canal path.

Refreshments are available in a Grade II listed Victorian Gothic mansion.

The name ‘Ansty' originates in Anglo-Saxon, meaning ‘one path' which seems entirely appropriate for a one-way canal walk. Another interesting fact about the village is that it was once owned by Lady Godiva – she of the flowing tresses!

A choice of paths here, either along the canal or the river. There's more to see on the canal route, including exhibits on the imaginative Canal Art Trail.

The pub is a favourite watering-hole for narrow boat crews, and dogs are welcome.

Very handy for the NEC at Cruftstime, this circular walk is on tidy grassland that keeps dogs reasonably clean in all weathers.

This is a former deer park with 2,400 acres of open space - including 7 lakes. The terrain is a mix of heathland, woodlands, wetlands and marshes. Dogs are welcome, but there are a few restrictions in certain areas to protect the wildlife at breeding times.

Most of the park is designated an ancient monument and there are three archaeological walks taking you past a Roman road, and evidence of prehistoric Brummies.

The paths here meander through a fine mix of woodland, meadow and waterside. The area is evidently a popular spot for local dog walkers, and we didn't see anyone without a dog!

This is a magnificent walk over the lower reach of Cannock Chase. The land is criss-crossed with paths and the heathland means it is easy to navigate this large expanse of open space.

This is a delightfully rural canal side walk, even though the roar of the traffic on the M6 motorway is never far away.

After the walk, enjoy a pot of tea in the well-manicured parkland surroundings of the hotel, where the friendly and helpful staff extend a warm welcome to all.

MOTORWAY WALKS - The Book

With nearly 200 walks from the Driving with Dogs website, this handy little book is an ideal guide to the best dog-friendly pubs and dog walks within 5 miles of UK motorway exits. Like the website walks, you'll also find information about campervan access, disabled facilities, kids' activities, safe parking places, sat-nav codes and written route directions too.

Driving with Dogs is working with the Border Collie Trust GB to bring you the Motorway Walks book at £9.99 (plus p&p). Every book sold will include a donation to the work of the Trust. Jem, the collie who has tested all the motorway walks, is a Border Collie Trust rescue and we're delighted that donations from the book he inspired will go back to helping the Trust with their work.
