Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall, Dumfries

Description

Good fun stopping place between Selkirk and Moffat, especially after heavy rain when the waterfall is in full spate.

It's worth the clamber to the top for big views on a clear day.

Jem had to be on-lead for the section that looks over the waterfall - if anyone had thrown a ball he would have been straight over the edge for sure.

Kinlochleven Walks, 45 minutes

The path to Grey Mare's Tail is signed from the car park and it's a well-maintained gravel path. Turn left at the first junction and follow the path uphill and eventually over a footbridge. Turn left after the bridge to reach the falls.

There are green, white, red and yellow waymarked routes of varying lengths to follow, and an up-to-date leaflet about these is available at the aluminium story visitor centre.  The walk to the waterfall and back has blue waymarkers.

The Mamore Lodge circular walk is a bit more strenuous (allow about 2 hours) and has fabulous views down Loch Leven to Glencoe.

There are two other walks, one visits the site of a former WW1 prisoner of war camp.

MOTORWAY WALKS - The Book

With nearly 200 walks from the Driving with Dogs website, this handy little book is an ideal guide to the best dog-friendly pubs and dog walks within 5 miles of UK motorway exits. Like the website walks, you'll also find information about campervan access, disabled facilities, kids' activities, safe parking places, sat-nav codes and written route directions too.

Driving with Dogs is working with the Border Collie Trust GB to bring you the Motorway Walks book at £9.99 (plus p&p). Every book sold will include a donation to the work of the Trust. Jem, the collie who has tested all the motorway walks, is a Border Collie Trust rescue and we're delighted that donations from the book he inspired will go back to helping the Trust with their work.
