The Stables

Description

"Breathtaking views over the Sound of Seil"

This 15th-century castle enjoys an idyllic lochside location and is set amongst the unspoilt hills and glens of a quiet peninsula overlooking Seil Sound, about 12 miles south of Oban. Ardmaddy, once a MacDougall castle, was acquired by the Campbells of Breadalbane in the late 17th century to form the western bastion of their estates, which at that time extended as far east as Taymouth Castle in Perthshire. This magnificent defensive position grants today’s (more peaceable) visitors an outstanding location.
Highly graded by Visit Scotland, these four holiday cottages (SBZ, SRW, SRX and SRY) and Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) are beautifully furnished, decorated and equipped. Although not isolated, they are set in secluded, peaceful locations on the estate, offering comfortable and spacious accommodation in a setting ideal for a relaxing holiday. The castle’s well known gardens, open all year round with Scotland’s Garden Scheme, are spectacular and a delight for gardening enthusiasts. They feature an extensive selection of colourful rhododendrons, unusual trees and shrubs and a formal kitchen garden, whilst the many acres of surrounding grounds offer superb hill walking and are a paradise for bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for guests to hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy’s stocked hill loch. A games room with darts, a small snooker table and table tennis are available for guests’ use, whilst Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) and The Stables (SBZ) have their own games rooms. There is also the use of the castle’s hard tennis court. The estate and local area is ideal for cycling.
Riding and golf are both within half an hour’s drive, and the area is perfect for touring, with miles of interesting coastline. The famous ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ links Seil Island to the mainland. Nearby there are gardens at An Cala, and the renowned National Trust garden of Arduaine. There is a pub/restaurant 2½ miles away over the Atlantic Bridge and Oban, ‘Gateway to the Islands’, boasts a wide choice of shops, bars and restaurants, a distillery and a War and Peace Museum, and has a delightful harbour with regular ferry and boat trips to the islands. In and around Oban there are many other attractions for all the family, including Oban Sea Life Centre, Inveraray Jail, and the Argyll Wildlife Park. Castles to visit include Inverary, Carnasserie and Dunadd hill fort.
Guests to Ardmaddy can be sure of a warm personal welcome from the owners, who are happy to provide fresh fruit and vegetables (in season) from the walled garden. Shops 12 miles, restaurant 2½ miles.
