Hardwick, Yorkshire

Description

A dog-friendly garden centre that's incredibly handy for a break just off the M1. A new owner has recently taken over and he's busy transforming a run-down garden centre into something extraordinary.

If you live locally, keep your eye out for doggy events and activities starting up. For a motorway stop - it's a 2 minute drive from the motorway!

Other Facilities

Picnic tables in a grassy area set aside for visitors either bringing their own food, or using the cafe there. The small cafe is busy and popular (where do all the people come from?) and uses local farm produce.

Shop with organic and local fruit and veg at sensible prices. Worth stocking up here if you're self-catering or making a picnic. Dog food section, with a carefully chosen range of dog foods. Also helpful leaflets and advice on dog care.

There are plans to add all sorts of dog services and activities as the new, completely dog-focused owner makes improvements. At the current rate of progress, it won't be long!

Walks

Turn right out of the garden centre car park and walk up the quiet country lane. Ignore the first footpath sign pointing to the right, and carry on around the corner to the second one. Cross the stile and immediately you're into a gloriously rural countryside walk across fields. We didn't go too far here as a tractor was making the most of the good weather and the air was full of pollen (and Jem gets hayfever). But folk at the garden centre who walk their dogs here assure us that it's a really good 30-40 minute walk.

Leave the M1 at Junction 31 and at the roundabout take the A57 towards Worksop. Take the first left turn immediately after you've joined the A57. The turning is marked as a No Through Road.

The lane bears sharply right, and Hardwick Country stores is on the right after about 80 metres. It's well signed and there's plenty of parking space..

MOTORWAY WALKS - The Book

With nearly 200 walks from the Driving with Dogs website, this handy little book is an ideal guide to the best dog-friendly pubs and dog walks within 5 miles of UK motorway exits.

Like the website walks, you'll also find information about campervan access, disabled facilities, kids' activities, safe parking places, sat-nav codes and written route directions too.

Walking the Dog: Motorway Walks for dogs and drivers is available from the RAC shop (link URL http://www.racshop.co.uk/rac-books.html) and all the usual online bookstores such as amazon.

If your local bookstore doesn't have a copy in stock, you can order by quoting the ISBN number: 978-1-845841-02-7
