New Mills Mousley Bottom dog walk (via Millenium Walkway), Derbyshire

Description

Dog walk 2 miles (1 – 1.5 hours), steep and muddy in places. No stiles or sheep. Brief sections on quiet road.

Details

GPS coords for car park: 53.3660, -2.0004  New Mills is a small market town with many facilities. It has two railway stations, the walk can be accessed along its route directly from Central Station.

Walk

1. (First photo) Park up at the Torr Valley car park in the centre of New Mills (50p for 2 hours). Leave the car park at the far side, turning left onto a steep cobbled street. At the bottom of the street turn right down another steep cobbled walkway, dropping down into the Torrs Riverside Park along the River Goyt. Following the black sign to the Millenium Walkway. Follow the path around keeping to the right, past the Torrs Hydro. Continue to follow the signs for the Millenium Walkway.

2. Cross the Millenium Bridge, past the Torr Vale Mill. Continue straight on past the iron bridge on the left going slightly uphill. At the end of the woods is an unclaimed road, cross this into the small park across the road.

3. Cross the park to the furthest point keeping to the left. At the end of the cul de sac, turn right opposite the house called "The Stables", through the gate into Mousley Bottom local nature reserve. Follow the path straight up the hill, past a gate on the left (this leads to a gentler woodland walk). Continue through a kissing gate before a steep (sometimes slippery) descent into Hague Bar Meadow. Cross to the path by the River Goyt.

4. Continue to follow the path by the river until you reach a large open park area. Just before this there is a beach by the river on the right that is a safe area for dogs to swim when the river is not in full flood. Follow the path through the park until you reach an iron gate with a gap at the side.  Take the right hand fork leading back to the small park and retrace your steps back to the car park across the Millenium Walkway. Or follow the signs up some steep steps to the visitor centre which has a toilet and refreshments.

Easy Strole

Millennium Bridge is narrow which is a problem during Covid 2-metre rule . Beautiful river views. Excellent picnic area. Plenty of off-lead opportunity.

Easy Stroll

Excellent directions. Plenty of off lead time. Millennium Bridge is narrow which can be a problem during Covid19 2-metre passing rules.

I enjoyed this walk.
