4* Craig-y-Nos Farmhouse, Powys, Wales

Description

The earliest parts of the farmhouse date from pre-1700, with later additions through Georgian and Victorian times. Set in 21 acres of land, 3 miles from Craig Y Nos Castle, the farmhouse can accommodate up to 6 people (plus 2 more can be slept in the lounge) and, being pet friendly, you can even bring your dogs at no extra charge. The farm is not overlooked by neighbours and nor do you overlook anyone else. You are completely surrounded on all sides by countryside, having gone down a long private drive to get to the farmhouse. Yet you are not short of things to do in the area. Besides the sports room and hot tub at Craig y Nos Castle, which guests of the farmhouse can use for no charge, there are four excellent pub/restaurants within a mile or two of the farmhouse - including the Penycae Inn (excellent for food - about 1 mile), the Ancient Briton (excellent for real ales - about 1.5 miles), plus of course, fine dining at Craig y Nos Castle which you can even walk across country to get to, from the farm. In the season, don't miss the Dan Yr Ogof Welsh Showcaves (3.5 miles) and Dinosaur Park, the nearby animal sanctuary (a small zoo really - 3 miles), and be sure to visit Brecon market town (25 miles) and in fine weather visit the Gower (one hour's drive to the south).

There are uninterrupted views of the countryside, with a large area of lawned gardens, dry stone walls, streams running through the grounds, a small waterfall and, just up the road, the famous Henrhyd waterfalls plus walks. There are extensive woodland areas and open fields to wander around both within the grounds, as well as many local mountain walks to explore (joining onto the Beacons Way).

MOTORWAY WALKS - The Book

With nearly 200 walks from the Driving with Dogs website, this handy little book is an ideal guide to the best dog-friendly pubs and dog walks within 5 miles of UK motorway exits. Like the website walks, you'll also find information about campervan access, disabled facilities, kids' activities, safe parking places, sat-nav codes and written route directions too.

Driving with Dogs is working with the Border Collie Trust GB to bring you the Motorway Walks book at £9.99 (plus p&p). Every book sold will include a donation to the work of the Trust. Jem, the collie who has tested all the motorway walks, is a Border Collie Trust rescue and we're delighted that donations from the book he inspired will go back to helping the Trust with their work.
