Bark Out

A visit to Bath with your dog

A visit to Bath with your dog

Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage city steeped in Roman history and Georgian charm, is also a haven for dog lovers. From scenic hill walks and riverside strolls to welcoming cafés and historic pubs, there's plenty for you and your furry companion to enjoy together. Here's how to spend a dog-friendly day out in Bath.

🐾 Dog Walks in and Around Bath

Kick off your day with a stroll along the Bath Skyline Walk. This six-mile circular route offers panoramic views of the city, rolling meadows, and ancient woodlands — all managed by the National Trust. Dogs are welcome, though leads are essential in livestock areas.

For a more urban wander, explore the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath, starting near Sydney Gardens. It's a peaceful riverside route with plenty of smells to sniff and spots to stop. Another central gem is Royal Victoria Park, just below the Royal Crescent — a beautifully landscaped space with wide paths, open fields, and dog-friendly zones.

If you're up for a short drive, Alexandra Park (Bear Flat) rewards you with stunning views over Bath — especially at sunset.

☕ Dog-Friendly Cafés

Bath boasts a great range of dog-friendly cafés. Cascara, on Upper Borough Walls, is a plant-based café that welcomes dogs with water bowls and plenty of fuss. Boston Tea Party (Kingsmead Square) has outdoor seating and friendly staff always happy to greet four-legged guests.

Also try The Green Bird Café, near the Royal Crescent — perfect for a breakfast stop or a post-walk coffee, with dogs welcome in the outdoor seating area.

🍻 Dog-Friendly Pubs

When it's time for a pint, The Bell Inn (Walcot Street) is a lively community pub that's very dog-friendly. Expect live music, local ales, and water bowls at the ready. Another great option is The Pulteney Arms, tucked behind Great Pulteney Street — this traditional pub is known for its cosy atmosphere and canine regulars.

For a pub with a garden, head to The Hare & Hounds in Lansdown. Dogs are welcome inside and out, and the terrace offers one of the best views over Bath's countryside.

🏛️ Dog-Friendly Attractions

While dogs aren't allowed inside the Roman Baths, they can join you in Parade Gardens (on lead), and many local shops around the city are happy to welcome well-behaved pets. Several walking tours (including ghost walks and historical trails) allow dogs — check with individual guides for pet policies.

🩺 Local Veterinary Care
