Once an airbase with a worldwide reputation for its cruise missiles and feisty protestors, the Common has now been transformed into a country park with 700 acres of heath and grassland surrounded by forest. Some structures can still be seen from its military past, although these are gradually disintegrating.  A bit of canine sensitivity needed between March and August when rare heathland birds are breeding.
