Plenty of dog walking here, and if you're taking a break on a journey please allow extra time for enthusiasm. It's hard to tear yourself away from the big open spaces. On a fine day, there's little better than being here with a flask of coffee, a picnic and the dog.

These are really suggestions to get you started - all the standard walking books have day walks and 4/5 mile routes in the area, and an OS map (OL Dark Peak) will see you right. Always be aware of the weather and if it starts to feel unpleasant, turn back! Walk 1 Stanage Edge. Turn left out of the car park and walk along Ringinglow Road to a path on the right at the corner. Take this path and aim in the general direction of the distinctive escarpment ahead. The path is clear and easy to follow and, because you've started at the top, it's flat and simple walking. You can go for just over 4 miles before encountering a road (the A57 in this case) so remember to turn around before committing to an 8-mile hike. Walk 2 - Burbage Rocks. Turn right out of the car park and walk around to the linear car park just around the bend (you can see it from the larger car park) and then take the second of the two marked footpaths through a wooden walkers' gate. Pass the Burbage Rocks and then reach a path crossroads (1.2 miles from the start) and turn right. At the next path crossroads (after approx 500m), turn right and follow this path back to the car park. This is a 2.5 mile circular walk.
