Find the perfect dog walk on your journey - Driving with Dogs

Historical dog walk in the Marches, Herefordshire

Description

This is one of my favourite castles on the Welsh/English border. It's perfect for a gentle stroll with the dog, a boisterous game site for travel-weary kids or even a romantic picnic.

Details

GPS coords for on-road parking: 51.9568, -2.9888  Limited parking by the entrance. No facilities. English Heritage site with free access.

Walk

The castle is effectively in the middle of nowhere with space for kids to dash around the ruins. It's easy to imagine the strategic importance of the site for the Normans as they tried to keep bashing the Welsh into submission, and before them the Romans having a crack at the unruly Welsh.
