One of the entrances to the National Forest is right in the middle of the Donington Park motorway services area with all the usual facilities. The start of the walk is as well hidden as the developers could make it, but Driving with Dogs sniffed it out!
Refreshments and facilities at the MOTO service station, which boasts a Thorntons chocolate shop as well as the usual franchises. Dogs on leads may be taken to the outside tables.
The land here advertises itself as one of the gateways to the National Forest, with an information board near the services entrance explaining the project.
Keeping the services block on the left, follow the path round as far as the start of the grassy area. Then walk forward, bearing slightly right, to join a path leading parallel to one of the service roads. Follow this path to the public footpath sign, and then turn left. At this point, the walk becomes properly rural as the path leads downhill between tilled fields and the sound of the motorway gives way to birdsong. Follow the path for 15 minutes or so, and then turn round to return to the car park for a 30 minute walk. It's possible to extend the walk by simply continuing along the track.
