Dog-friendly Warwick: your doggie guide to walks, cafes, pubs and where to stay

Dog-friendly Warwick: your doggie guide to walks, cafes, pubs and where to stay

Famous for its castle and history, Warwick is a lovely small town to visit at any time of the year. But where can you go with your dog?  Well, let's get the big negative over right away. Warwick Castle doesn't allow dogs anywhere, inside or out. So you've saved an entrance fee and now we can move on.

Definitely the best way to see the historic county town is on foot. A handy free guide is available from Visitor Information on Jury Street and takes you around the historic centre. A longer Town Trail leaflet for a 3-4 hour self-guided tour costs less than £1.00 and it's full of surprising snippets and facts you'd probably miss out on otherwise. Dogs meanwhile get a noseful of medieval mutt messages from the timbers of historic buildings.

Refreshments with pooch are not hard to find. Here are some of my favourites. The ultimutt doggie hang-out for coffee is Coffee#1 on the corner of High Street and Swan Street. Great coffee, dog-friendly and in the heart of the town. A bit out of town is the wonderful Pastelaria Portuguesa, with fabulous cakes and pastries and it's dog-friendly too. Find them at 57 Coton End, on the main road after the St John's museum and going towards Leamington, parking nearby is possible.

Back into the town centre you'll find dog-friendly pubs. Try The Tilted Wig (pictured above) in the central Market Square in summer and sit outside to people watch, or wander past the 14th century Lord Leycester hospital to the dog-friendly Vine Inn on West Street. It's next to a totally bonkers black and white Tudor building, the Tudor House Inn.

For more formal dining we love the French cuisine at 7-Square. Good dogs are welcome to join you, and it's opposite the entrance to St Mary's church.

Warwick Racecourse dog walk and caravan siteWALKIES The favourite local off-lead dog-walking places are Warwick Racecourse and St Nicholas Park. Both have P&D car parks and are within walking distance of the town. And you'll find even more dog walks in Warwick and dog-friendly pubs on Driving with Dogs.

Where to stay  Caravans and motorhomes are welcome on Warwick Racecourse. Pet-friendly town centre hotels are listed on Booking.com
